ROLES OF PARTICIPANTS

Teacher Requesting Services

  • Initiates requests for services for students.
  • Defines the concerns rather than services required.
  • Attends all BSC meetings relating to students about whom there are concerns.
  • Provides proper support documentation for all BSC meetings attended.
  • Clearly communicates the needs and strategies attempted and maintains close
    communication with parents/guardians.

Principal/Assistant Principal

  • Serves as a coordinator for all communication and subsequent delivery of services.
  • Logs receipt of RES form, routes form to appropriate staff, and documents the determination.
  • Schedules and attends all BSC meetings and maintains a focus and direction for the committee.
  • Ensures that minutes are prepared using the database developed for district use in all schools.
  • Requires that all records pertaining to students are properly maintained and kept up to date. All cumulative files should indicate that BSC minutes are available.
  • Assigns the “action person” to monitor student progress and suggested strategies

CST Representative

  • Takes an active role in all BSC meetings and serves as the “case manager” for students who require services at Level III.
  • Formally consults with staff as directed by the BSC or principal.
  • Communicates the need for services at Level III to the Director of Child Study Team Services/Director of Special Services.
  • Makes certain that referral forms are received in a timely manner to initiate CST services.
  • Keeps the principal informed as to the progress of the student referred.
    Adheres to State Regulations with regard to referral and written notice.

School Counselor

  • Provides input in the affective domain.
    Makes suggestions for classroom strategies that address organization, self-esteem, home/school impact.
    Provides group/individual/parent/teacher support.
  • Corrective Reading Teacher / Basic Skills
  • Diagnoses specific reading problems.
  • Provides specific suggestions for meeting needs of students in the classroom.

Speech/Language Teacher

  • Diagnoses specific speech/language problems in accordance with State regulations.
  • Provides specific suggestions for meeting needs of students in the classroom.

Classroom Teacher Serving on Committee

  • Serves as the expert in classroom practices.
  • Serves as a resource for specific teaching techniques and strategies.

Curriculum Supervisor

  • Serves as an expert on curriculum, standards, and classroom pedagogy.
