Today's rapidly changing world presents young people with unique and diverse challenges and opportunities.   To help students face these challenges and acquire academic, career and personal / social success, caring adults must provide guidance and support. Emphasizing and modeling traits of good character enable students to become positive, self-directed adults and responsible members of the community.

Elementary school years set the tone for developing the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for our children to become healthy productive citizens. Counselors work as a team with school personnel, parents and the community to create a caring atmosphere whereby children's needs are met through prevention, early identification and intervention.

Middle school years can be positive ones of self-discovery for children as they begin to search for their own unique identities. Together, middle school counselors, parents, teachers, administrators and community members help students focus on the journey of transition from childhood to adolescence through a caring, collaborative effort.

The mission of the Mount Laurel School District counseling model is to provide a comprehensive, developmental program addressing the academic, career and personal / social success of all students. All students have dignity and worth and have the right to participate in the school counseling program. The counseling model seeks to support and encourage students as they develop a sense of social and emotional connection to the learning community. Such links promote student growth and increase the likelihood of academic success. The school counseling program is an important and integral part of lifelong student learning.

". . . building intelligence and character is the goal of true education."

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
